Fall in NYC: The Best Things to Do

Fall in New York City brings cooler air, changing leaves, packed cultural calendars, and plenty of reasons to spend the day exploring. From Broadway and Central Park to Halloween celebrations and major citywide events, autumn is one of the best seasons to experience the city.

If you're planning a fall getaway, staying at Aliz Hotel Times Square puts you right in the middle of the action. The Theater District is outside your door, Central Park is a short ride away, and many of the season's biggest events are easy to reach from Midtown.

Looking for things to do in NYC in the fall? Start with these favorites.

Catch a Broadway Show

Fall is a particularly exciting time for Broadway, with new productions, returning favorites, and special promotions giving theatergoers plenty of choice.

One event to put on your calendar is NYC Broadway Week, which runs September 8 through 20, 2026. Participating Broadway shows offer two-for-one tickets, making it a great opportunity to see a production and enjoy one of New York's most iconic experiences. Tickets went on sale August 18.

And you don't have to go far. Aliz Hotel Times Square is in the heart of the Theater District, putting dozens of Broadway theaters within an easy walk.

Explore Central Park in Peak Foliage

Few fall activities in NYC are more classic than an afternoon in Central Park.

The park's roughly 18,000 trees turn shades of yellow, orange, red, and gold as autumn progresses. The Central Park Conservancy recommends several particularly scenic areas for foliage, including The Mall and Literary Walk, The Ramble, the North Woods, Conservatory Garden, and the Reservoir.

For a leisurely fall afternoon, enter the park around 59th Street and make your way north. Walk beneath the trees along The Mall, continue toward Bethesda Terrace, then explore the winding paths around The Ramble.

Spend an Afternoon on the High Line

The High Line is another excellent way to experience autumn outdoors.

The elevated park stretches from Hudson Yards through Chelsea, combining gardens, public art, architecture, and city views. In the fall, ornamental grasses and seasonal plantings take on warm autumn colors while the cooler temperatures make walking comfortable.

Start near Hudson Yards and walk south, stopping to explore Chelsea Market or one of the galleries in the surrounding neighborhood.

For a different perspective, visit after sunset. The city lights begin to take over as the sky darkens, creating a completely different atmosphere.

Experience New York Comic Con

For pop culture fans, one of the biggest events in NYC this fall arrives October 8 through 11.

New York Comic Con returns to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for four days, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026. The event brings together comics, anime and manga, film and television, gaming, cosplay, authors, artists, celebrity guests, panels, and special activities.

This year's anniversary theme is Coney Island, bringing together two iconic New York institutions.

The Javits Center is only a short distance from Aliz Hotel, and once you're finished exploring the show floor, you're close to Times Square, Broadway, restaurants, and Midtown nightlife.

See Free Fall Events in Bryant Park

You don't need a ticket to enjoy New York's cultural calendar.

Bryant Park hosts free performances and events throughout the fall, making it an easy addition to a Midtown itinerary. The park's September schedule includes live music and dance performances, while October brings additional concerts and seasonal programming.

On September 4, the Bryant Park Picnic Performance features New Breed Brass Band, Aberdeen, and Brass Queens. On September 10, visitors can enjoy a dance party featuring the Alfredo de la Fé All Star Band and George Gee Swing Orchestra.

Get Into the Halloween Spirit

October brings Halloween season to New York, and the city goes all in!

The Village Halloween Parade takes place October 31, winding through Greenwich Village with elaborate costumes, giant puppets, performers, musicians, and plenty of spectators. The annual celebration is one of the city's most recognizable Halloween traditions.

For a family-friendly option, NYC Parks also hosts Halloween events throughout the five boroughs. The city's 2026 calendar includes neighborhood celebrations, pumpkin events, and children's parades throughout October.

You can also make the season your own with a visit to a pumpkin-filled farmers market, a spooky cocktail at a Midtown bar, or an evening walk through neighborhoods decorated for Halloween.

Visit a Fall Farmers Market

For a slower-paced afternoon, explore one of New York's farmers markets.

The Union Square Greenmarket is a year-round favorite, bringing farmers, bakers, growers, and producers into the heart of Manhattan.

Fall is an especially appealing time to browse the stalls, when you'll find seasonal apples, pumpkins, squash, baked goods, flowers, cider, and other autumn specialties.

Watch the NYC Marathon

On November 1, New York hosts one of the world's most famous sporting events: the TCS New York City Marathon.

The 2026 race is particularly significant because it marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic five-borough course. Nearly 60,000 participants and more than two million spectators are expected to experience the race across New York City.

You don't need to be a runner to enjoy marathon day. Find a spot along the route and cheer for the runners as they make their way through the city before the final stretch into Central Park.

Take in the City From Above

Fall is also a great time to see Manhattan from a rooftop.

At Aliz Hotel, Dear Irving on Hudson occupies the hotel's 40th and 41st floors, offering sweeping views across Manhattan. It's an ideal place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the city transition from afternoon to evening.

Plan Your Fall Stay in Times Square

From Broadway Week in September to New York Comic Con in October and the TCS New York City Marathon in November, the fall calendar gives visitors plenty of reasons to plan a trip to New York.
